What Are Digital Impressions?
A digital impression is a virtual recreation of your mouth. It provides detailed imaging of everything from your teeth to the hard and soft tissue in the mouth. Dental labs use the information obtained with a digital impression to create a restoration, such as crowns, bridges or veneers, that is custom-made just for you.
How the Patient Experience Improves With Digital Impressions
Some of the ways digital impressions have improved the patient experience at Pike & Valega, DDS include:
- No more use of unpleasant tasting substances
- A full set of impressions can be completed in just a few minutes
- No need to have to sit still for lengthy periods with bulky trays in the mouth
- Faster treatment time. Digital impressions can be sent to the dental lab right away, which allows the final restoration to be created faster than if the lab had to wait for traditional impressions to be sent by mail.
- Better, more accurate fitting dental restorations – Dental labs use the detailed images captured with digital impressions to create a restoration that fits more comfortably in the mouth.
How Are Digital Impressions Taken?
Before digital impressions can be taken, your dentist will prep your tooth or teeth for restoration. How your dentist prepares your teeth will vary depending on what type of dental treatment and restoration you need. Once the tooth or teeth have been prepared, it is time to take the digital impressions.
Using advanced, state-of-the-art digital dental technology, your dentist or a dental hygienist carefully scans your teeth and mouth. The images captured by the digital dental technology are sent to a nearby computer. Once your entire mouth has been scanned, the digital images combine to create a detailed computer-generated replica of your mouth.
The final computer-generated replica of your mouth is then sent to the dental lab, where your restoration will be created. A copy of the digital impressions is also saved to your patient file.
