Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures take two of the most common tooth replacement treatment options, dental implants, and traditional dentures, and combine them into one. At Pike & Valega, DDS, we offer implant-supported dentures as part of our implant dentistry services. Learn more about this tooth replacement option and see if you might be a good candidate for this type of implant dentistry.
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are very similar to traditional dentures. However, implants are used instead of using sticky adhesives to hold the dentures into place.
The dental implants are surgically placed into the jaw bone, creating a strong, sturdy foundation to support the dentures.
The denture, designed to look and feel like your natural teeth, replaces multiple missing teeth at once. Small attachments are built into the underside of the denture. These small attachments line up with the dental implants. When you place the denture in the mouth, these small attachments “snap” into place, and the denture is held securely.
The Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
There are numerous benefits of choosing to replace multiple teeth with implant-supported dentures. Some of the benefits include:
- No fear of dentures wobbling or falling out when talking or eating
- No longer having to use messy adhesives or glues to hold dentures into place
- More natural looking – implant-supported dentures use less plastic so they look more like your natural teeth
- More comfortable – implant-supported dentures are less likely to cause irritation to the gums or cause canker sores
- Easy to remove – implant-support dentures can be removed whenever you want
- Easy to clean
- Fewer food restrictions – be able to enjoy some of your favorite foods without worrying about dentures falling out or slipping out
- Less likely to cause difficulties speaking – implant-supported dentures are less likely to cause you to slur or spit while speaking
Who Is a Good Candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?
A good candidate for implant-supported dentures is someone who is missing multiple teeth. You must also be in good health and have healthy gums. Good bone density is also important but not required. An additional procedure, known as a bone graft, may be needed.
Dr. D. Timothy Pike can assess whether you have enough bone density to support a dental implant. He can also help you determine if you need additional dental procedures, such as those intended to treat gum disease, included in your treatment plan.
